OVERALL PERSONALITY: Emma grew up a very independent kid, but lost that after marrying Jason Mercer. She became very quiet and dependent on him, terrified of his anger. Skittish and as slightly timid as she was, she was a good mother though her protective nature made her do what was necessary to make sure her children were safe. For Tess, that meant she was cold and sometimes even mean. Everything she did was entirely selfless, doing what was best for her kids rather than her. After divorcing Jason, Emma regained her independence and puts her selflessness to good use.
HISTORY: Emma was born the only child to two Magi, Andrew and Georgina Sutton. Her childhood was a relatively happy one up until her father grew terribly ill. He was in and out of hospitals starting when she was seven and finally ending with his death three years later. This left Georgina struggling to make ends meet and by thirteen Emma tried helping her in anyway she could. She took odd jobs from the neighbors, walking dogs or cleaning house or gardening. It wasn’t much, but it allowed Georgina to focus on bills and food. Emma would use the money she earned for clothes and the little things she wanted.
By sixteen she got a real job at a clothing store part time while she went to school. She kept up with her grades and her work, avoiding boys and whatnot. Between work, school, and softball (an attempt at a scholarship). It wasn’t until she was about twenty that she relaxed and considered dating. This is when she met Jason Mercer. He was charming and she fell for him hard. When he asked her to marry him, she said yes without a thought. She even dropped out of college at his request when he told her that he wanted to start a family and she wouldn’t have to work ever again.
Soon after that, the charm ended. He got mean and controlling and his temper skyrocketed to the point that he would beat her. When she was pregnant, the beatings weren’t as bad, however. After Tess was born, the beatings grew harsh once again. He wasn’t happy about having a daughter at all and took it out on Emma up until Tess started working. She would get beaten as well, and when Emma had Jordan, it all just got worse for Tess. Eventually, Emma had to put a stop to it. So instead of coddling the child, she grew harsher in order to prevent Jason from stepping in.
She knew that what she was doing was wrong, but Jason terrified her and she didn’t want Tess to become the coward she was. She never expected that Tess would pack up and leave without saying goodbye, especially while they were packing to move to NYC. It left Emma heartbroken, and she eventually grew depressed. She tried to kill herself, but a vampire named Anthony Argent witnessed her frantic hysterics and offered her a way out.
She took it, let him turn her and teach her how to control her emotions and thirst. When she had a mild amount of control she decided to confront her abusive husband with divorce papers so that she could finally live her life. Despite Anthony losing his life that night, she convinced Jason to sign the papers and left. She later found that Anthony had given her a fair amount of money. Though she keeps in contact with her son, she avoids Jason and now she is well known fashion designer in Manhattan.
