HISTORY: Iwo Kosnik was born in the early seventeenth century to a pair of aristocrats. Magi abilities had skipped his mother, but manifested in him quite nicely. When Iwo was eighteen and his powers surfaced, there was an angry mob on his parents pretty quick. They did not survive, but neither did the bulk of the mob when Iwo set fire to the town and waited at the top of the gate for the fleeing peasants. Not many escaped, but there was a Werewolf by the name of Eligia who had both survived and caught Iwo's scent. After word of this massacre got out, a small coven contacted him to offer protection, and he accepted. Over the next few centuries Iwo rose through the ranks to one day become the head of this coven. Once in charge Iwo began to lay the groundwork for his son Feliks to expand the already growing coven. In the early twentieth century Iwo died of age and nepotism played its course, placing Feliks at the head of the coven, by this time named Rada Iwo, meaning Iwo council in Polish. Under Feliks Rada Iwo expanded outside Poland, remaining mainly in eastern Europe, but also stretching as far as Italy (practically a skeleton over there, though) to the west and a small distance into Russia to the east. The previous and current Kosniks were both quite good for the coven, so when Albin was born there was celebration. For the eighteen years without magic Albin was taught at home and had a Rada Iwo escort whenever he desired to go for so much as a walk. This sheltering was torture to him, but he accepted the need for it. The boy who would likely one day take leadership of something as big as the Rada Iwo was a great way to hurt the coven, especially before he was able to fight back. With this in mind, a pack of werewolves murdered Albin's escort and abducted him around his seventh birthday. While there was no door to the room where he was kept, he was tied securely to some pipes. Around the fifth day he was there, the pack leader, Eligia, went into the room to end his life. She soon found that she was unable to commit the deed. Eligia had never killed a boy that young. Even if the boy was the grandson of the man who had destroyed her home, she just couldn't find the will. The words she told him before she stormed out, and the words that will remain with him, were "I'm sorry. I would have made it quick, if possible. Alas, you must wait until the full moon to die to the Wolf" the next day he was brough what was to be his last meal Albin viewed this as what mercy the woman could offer, though he was far from accepting of this mercy. Two days passed, and with one day before a full moon Albin awoke at noon to Eligia screaming curses and his father insulting her. Other sounds of fighting were just white noise. Eventually Eligia was thrown into the room, followed by Feliks. Albin's father pointed at the diwned woman and asked "Ta kobieta wzięła Cie?" (This woman took you?) Albin nodded when he asked, and Feliks proceeded to choke her to death, feeling that magic would be quicker quicker she deserved. The state of Albin's life returned to normal afterward, with a few more bodyguards and less trips outside. At the first sign of magical ability this coddling changed. Albin was sent over to a friend of the family by the name of Leopold Banazewski in America to learn. Leo was one of those elderly people who just seem to be older than the Earth they inhabit, and Al wondered how long Leo would be able to teach before croaking. (The answer turned out to be about twenty three years.) The training was tough and his friends were few, as expected. What Albin did not expect to find was purpose to stay in this new country. Other magi that knew of Rada Iwo either did not care or thought less of him for his family ties. This country was a different place. The golden grandchild of Iwo was just another person here, and he loved it. Around forty three Albin was showing an affinity for wind, though doing well with earth too. Fire and water, while neither was his forte, were decent enough. This was where his training under Leopold abruptly stopped. The old man fell ill and while Al had come far, his skills at healing were not honed or great enough to save Leo. Leopold was going to die, it was really just a question of when. The two and a half years were spent easing Leo's passing as thanks for twenty something years of training. In the last week of Leo's life a letter arrived from Albin's father, Feliks stating knowledge of Leopold's condition and asking Albin to return to Poland. Albin does not recall reading it aloud, but he must have, as Leopold's dying words were "Albin, czy naprawdę tego chcesz? jeśli wrócisz do domu to na pewno pozostanie tam do końca." (Albin, are you sure you want this? When you go home you are sure to remain there to the end.) Upon his teacher's passing, Albin cut ties with his father and moved to Harper valley, hearing of it's long history of magic, assuming there would be still be some Magi there to connect with. |
