My birth was a happy one, but also a nerve-wracking one. I was born cursed. At least that's how my family viewed it at the time. My parents were both werebears by birth, stemming from two very different bloodlines. My mother was a noble woman and my father was a slave. My father had been a gladiator, forced to fight in arenas against other gladiators and many different and very dangerous animals. One of which was a grizzly bear. One that was pregnant with a single cub. A fight to the death that brought forth what my parents considered to be my curse and my fathers freedom. My father killed the bear, and that very night, in the silence of his new found freedom, a magi appeared before him. The bear that he had killed had been the same kind in which he shifted into every full moon. The magi was angry with him for betraying his kin by slaughtering her and the tiny little cub within her. She cursed him in the worst way, forcing his first born child to share a body and soul with the unborn cub of the mother bear. My father, fearing what would come of a werebear child who also shared a body with a real bear, avoided marrying for many years. Finally, he couldn't avoid it. He fell in love with my mother, Elly, he caller her, and soon she was with child. I was born a few months later, but there was nothing that really let my parents know that I shared my body with the deceased bear cub's soul. I didn't even really understand the extra voice in my head until I was about 2 or 3 years old. When I could finally put words to my thoughts, it didn't take me long to communicate and embrace my bear partner. I would often see her form in my dreams and talk to her when my body was not conscience. The first time I saw her I asked her her name. She'd never been named. I gave her her first and only name, calling her Anora. She became my best friend and my other half. I never viewed her as the curse that my parents feared so wholly. My parents tiptoed around me, afraid that any minor comment or word of contempt would bring out the passenger within me. But Anora was a gentle soul. She kept me calm more often than not. I loved my family dearly, regardless of how they treated me. I studied literature and art with my mother, and my father taught me to protect myself and even taught me a little math, which was unheard of at the time. My mother also taught me how to be a lady and how to take care of a husband, but as the years passed and as I grew into a woman, my mind was less on the men that would soon come to court me and more on the world outside of my beautiful town of Pompeii. Anora and I dreamed of traveling for so long and so passionately, that when my parents finally brought up the idea of me marrying, I turned them down. I told them I wanted to go out and see the world. I was immortal and I had my whole life ahead of me before I even needed to think about settling down. While they were stunned at first, they decided to let me go out on my own. I was capable of handling myself with my fathers years of training, and I was far stronger than most people. On top of it, they knew that Anora would not let anything happen to me that would end in my doom. I let my feet guide me, with only Anora for company. It wasn't long before I hopped onto a ship and sailed across the Mediteranian, having had no idea that was the destination I was bring brought to. I didn't care where I went, as long as I could meet new people and see all of the different cultures that filled the expansive world. I didn't believe that the world was flat. I knew there had to be more out there. And I was right. I wandered Africa for a long while before I ended up back in Pompeii. I visited my parents, it was around 15AD, and stayed a while. It was there that I met Naomi, the woman who eventually became one of my best friends, next to Anora. When I left Pompeii again, I left with her. We traveled with one another until about 100AD. Naomi was with me when I found out my home had been destroyed and my parents were dead. Even werebears like my parents wouldn't have been able to escape the town in time. I took it as well as anyone would take the fact that their home had been reduced to ash and rubble and their only blood related family was dead. I left Naomi behind, my grief taking over. I shifted and I stayed shifted, with Anora in my mind, and stayed that way for many years until the grief subsided enough for me to function again. I saw Naomi here and there before the 1300s, but it was only for short periods of time. My path was taking me in a different direction. I was slowly educating myself more and more. Anora and I learned a lot. We complimented each other, we balanced one another. It was the best possible feeling to have when I was feeling so lost. We explored, we learned, we just lived. In the 1880's I started my own company. It was a weapons company. For the past 134 years, I've been developing weapons and defense systems. My company is known around the world, though most people don't know the woman at the head of the company. Two months ago, a new branch of my company opened up in Las Vegas. I moved my headquarters there, along with my beloved apprentice, after hearing about the turmoil that befell the city. I met Naomi again and soon found myself at the head, with three other supernaturals, of a resistance that is aiming to bring the city back into a state of peace. |
