so, here's what happened:
[style= font: 10px arial; text-align: justified; padding: 4px; filter:alpha(opacity=70); opacity:.7;] Rural New York was a great place to be, he decided. Even if just on assignment, he could feel entirely at home here because the sounds were so much less, the scents less harsh, and the food less expensive. Free, even, if you happened to be a werecat. The moon wasn't full, but he could see the forest floor as easily as if it had been, and he knew that this place was sparcely frequented by human hunters. Prime hunting territory for a predator. Sure, it was more work than sushi from a Japanese restaurant, but this was much more fresh, and he enjoyed the musty earthen scents of a fresh kill.
Prowling beneath the cover of tree and cloud, he breathed in the night air, the scents of the forest hitting his palate. There was prey out there, and he was hungry. There was a hunger pulling at the back of his mind, driving his paw steps quickly through the undergrowth, and he only slowed when he heard the hoof step of his prey. Crouching, he slunk forward to a position just downwind of the small doe, his ears perked forward to listen for movement. Rocking back and forth on his haunches for a moment, he powered himself through the bushes and tackled the deer full force. It only had time to screech once before his jaws closed around the top of his head.
Settling down with his upper body over the deer's torso, he bit down hard on the skull, viciously snapping the bone and piercing the brain, killing it instantly. He held on until the creature stopped squirming, before standing and picking his kill up by the throat. Dragging it along the ground between his legs, he hauled it with him as he climbed a tree, finally coming to a rest on a thick branch, dozens of feet above the ground. His kill rested on the branch as he licked the fur and began tearing away at his prey.
So satisfying....

Confidence, not cockiness. Cockiness is knowing who you are and pushing it down everyone's throat. The high-pitched screaming didn’t stop; blurriness, everything was a big blur. Gia couldn’t see anything. All she heard was the screams. Disorientated and confused, she lunged forward, feeling a sharp pain on her lower back. As she collapsed to the ground, the screams finally subsided. She was alone, nothing but complete silence, nothing. A burning sensation spread throughout her lower back. Gia awoke abruptly, as tears rolled down her face. Her heart was pounding so hard almost as if it was trying to escape. Her breathing was shallow and her mouth was dry. Shaking she made her way out of bed and over to the bathroom. She turned on the sink letting the cold water hit her shaking hands. Gia rubbed the back of her neck, as the cool water dripped down her spine. She starred into the mirror, slowly turning; she lifted her shirt and glared down at the reflection of the substantial scar. She touched it gently, tracing her fingers over each of the claw marks. Gia let out a loud sigh. Her body returning to normal, she made her way out to her empty living room. Her head panned around the room, looking at the various boxes that still needed to be opened. Why are you here? You know this isn’t you, you want to be out there. Gia was losing the long fought battle with herself and she knew it. She walked over to the window starring out into the sleeping town. The moonlight shined brightly on her, inviting her out to join the night.
“I can’t.” Gia said aloud, her mind getting the best of her. YOU CAN! She knew her mind was right. She wanted to, really badly. It has been months since the incident, she shouldn’t live the rest of her life dwelling on that day, nor should she punish herself. GIA GO! She smirked, knowing it was about time. Gia felt the rush of adrenaline make its way throughout her body. Without thinking, she made her way out of her apartment and down the street, running as fast as she humanly could into the night. When she reached the outskirts of town, she stopped, squinting at the dark forest in front of her.
She closed her eyes tightly, feeling the cool wind brush up against her body. Gia was eager. It had been so long. She walked slowly into the woods; she felt the cool ground beneath her feet. Her eyes shot open, she could see. Everything was so clear, her ears perked up hearing the various noises, her nose crinkled as she breathed in slowly, smelling so much. Gia looked down, much closer to the ground; she starred at two of her paws. She felt amazing, she missed this, and there was no way she was going to go the rest of her life without doing this ever again. No way.
Gia stretched, extending her claws, feeling the dirt shift beneath them. What to do, what to do? She thought. This is what she loved. This is who she was. She casually made her way about the forest, meandering throughout the trees, enjoying the night.

so, here's what happened:
[style= font: 10px arial; text-align: justified; padding: 4px; filter:alpha(opacity=70); opacity:.7;] Tearing into the flank of the deer, Kevin savored the salty copper flavor of the meat as it slid down his throat, licking his maw to clean it of blood before digging in again. The meat on the flank was a a little less tough than the meat on the shoulders and legs, but all of it was delicious, and the cat within him was soothed as his teeth picked through it. If he was lucky, he wouldn't have to eat for a few days after a meal of this magnitude. Not that it mattered, considering that it was a hobby of his to try the food whenever he traveled somewhere new.
He paused as he heard and smelled something new approaching. Lifting his head from his kill, he opened his maw to breathe in the air, his ear twitching as her scent hit is palate. A shifter? How unexpected. She was probably far less out of place than he was, considering that her shift animal was originally native to the area, and his animal was a continent away from its native environment, but jungles and trees were still as natural to him as to a bird. If he didn't want to be spotted, he wouldn't be.
Huh. Spotted, the werecat thought to himself. I made a funny.
Watching as the puma prowled nearer, he resumed tearing into his meal, not willing to bother with the interruption. After all, his stomach was already in meal mode, and there was no stopping that. Ripping another chunk from the bone, he swallowed. His tail flicked closer to himself as he shifted a little to reach the next section of his kill. The movement shifted the carcass in the tree just enough that a piece of an organ fell from the open body cavity, landing with a wet plop on the forest floor.
Darn it.

Confidence, not cockiness. Cockiness is knowing who you are and pushing it down everyone's throat. Gia was the happiest she had been in months. This was long overdue and definitely well deserved. It was, the one thing left that connected her to her grandparents. They would be proud of her, and all of her accomplishments. She thought fondly of them, and how they would react to her various life events, and stories. How they would yell at her for blaming herself, saying how it was not her fault and that she did everything she could. Gia wished that they were still around; she could have used them months ago, even now. She could not help but let her mind wander, but the longer she had been walking around the more she focused on her surroundings, no longer letting her mind take over. The bickering and long fought battle in her head was finally gone. It left all her thoughts and worries behind. This is why she loved this. She was free.
The shifter made her way around the forest floor, her walk turned into a trot, and before she knew it, she was running. It was a great night for it, the cool air hugged her body, as the moonlight made place shine. She knew this would end up being a nightly thing now. Gia stopped in front of a tree, and without hesitation, made her way up as high as she could possibly go. Her claws dug deep into the bark as she positioned herself on a branch, and laid down, looking out into the night.
Her nerves getting the best of her she made her way swiftly down the lofty tree, and continued to make her way about the forest, trying to acquaint herself with these new surroundings best that she could. The shifter slowed her pace back down to a walk, no need to rush; there was no real threat out here. She wanted to enjoy the night as best as she could. Gia came to a halt when something fell in the middle of her path. Nearing it, she crinkled her nose, breathing in deeply, picking up the scent of a familiar smell. Food.
Gia had only on the rarest occasions had actually hunted to eat something in form. Although she enjoyed the thrill of the hunt, and the kill was satisfying, she to the best of her abilities held off on it. As she liked her chops, she shook her head, confused as to why it would randomly be laying there, but then it made sense. The shifter immediately looked up. Her round eyes, narrowed in on the large cat, gnawing away at its fresh kill.

so, here's what happened:
[style= font: 10px arial; text-align: justified; padding: 4px; filter:alpha(opacity=70); opacity:.7;] Flicking his ear irritably, Kevin took another bite of muscle, licking his nose to clear it of blood. He very rarely encountered other werecats, and despite the powerful scent of the carcass, he could smell that this female was a shifter, not a werecat. He'd not met many of them before, but he wasn't foolish enough to mistake the two. His tail flicked over his flank as he considered the creature.
She was smaller than he was by a decent margin, and her limbs were much less muscular. He knew from his studies in the area that his form, the jaguar, had the strongest bite strength of any big cat, and that she would have to be out of her mind to challenge him for the kill, but still he couldn't deny that his instincts were leaning more toward fight than flight.
It was particularly strange, since in human form, he wouldn't consider fighting someone just because they happened to come across him when he was eating, but then again, controlling instincts were the most difficult part of the transformation. This kill was his, and she was intruding. Standing, he snarled a warning to her, his thick claws digging into the tree branch. Cougars weren't quite as prone to trees as jaguars, but he knew that she was entirely capable of climbing to steal his prey.
His easy-going human mind was shoved back from the surface as the instincts of the jaguar surfaced and took more immediate control. Aware as he was of what was happening, he couldn't bring himself to want to stop in his aggression. Blood dripped from his teeth as he bared his fangs at her, his ears falling flat against his head. He was not the sort of creature she wanted to mess with, and he would make sure that she knew it.
He was still too young to his transformation to fully control it....

Confidence, not cockiness. Cockiness is knowing who you are and pushing it down everyone's throat. The shifters eyes were locked on the jaguar. She was frozen. She could not understand why a cat like that would be here, definitely out of place. Her nose crinkled, bothered by the strong scent of the kill. The only logical explanation for it was that it was a shifter, why else would there be a jaguar roaming about the woods of New York State. Although Gia made the puma, her preferred choice she was more than capable of choosing any other animal she wanted, if it meant blending in better. It was one of the key things that her grandparents had taught her, to keep them and their secret safe. As much as she would have loved to, there would have been some confusion and concern if a cougar was found roaming around central park. It made sense, and she did not mind it at all. It was times like that she would be able to experiment with other creatures that she was not so comfortable with yet.
This was the main factor in determining where she would live throughout her travels, but something was not sitting right with Gia. Something was wrong. A shifter would know better than to jeopardize the exposure of their kind, or at least she would hope so. Even in this forest at night, it was still not safe, it just takes one person to notice something out of the ordinary and that is it.
Gia watched as the jaguar rose and snarled at her, bearing his blood-covered fangs. Perhaps it was not a shifter after all. She backed up slowly, not wanting a repeat of the bear incident, although this was a completely different situation. Her tail flicked, and her ears flattened. Gia’s eyes remained on the cat high above her; she could not pull them away. She was mesmerized by the beauty, but frozen in fear.

so, here's what happened:
[style= font: 10px arial; text-align: justified; padding: 4px; filter:alpha(opacity=70); opacity:.7;] The shifter backed away slowly, clearly uncertain, but it wasn't fast enough for the jaguar within his mind. He could smell the fear in her scent, the adrenaline coursing through her veins as he threatened her. It gave his predatory mind no end of satisfaction, and with a snarl, he threatened again, his jaws wide to display his fangs as his tail lashed back and forth. He feinted forward a step with a sudden jerk, roaring threateningly and ending with a rolling snarl. His golden eyes glinted in the faint dappled light of the stars that fell on his branch. There was no mistaking his message: this was his kill, and he would attack if she did not retreat.
Settling down in the stillness that always preceded the leap and following kill, his tail flicked back and forth, his jaws still open in a threat. His thick muscles were coiled and ready to release like the explosion of a gunshot, and his jaws would find a place to bite and latch on, until the threat was gone. It was the natural order of things for a jaguar, and consequently a werecat, although he had never lost control to this degree before. He had never encountered a shifter while protecting a kill, when the instincts were at a peak. Had he encountered her while simply roaming the night, there was little chance he would have been hostile to this extent, but this intrusion was one that was difficult for his higher brain to overcome.
Still, somewhere at the back of his mind, he was struggling to rein control back to himself, and it was slipping from his hands as if it was a rope made of gelatin. He had been trained to focus on his human self to regain control, and he tried to recall that morning, when he had driven across New York state to get here, and the details of his assignment. It was only these efforts that held the fraying rope of restraint, keeping him from leaping from the branch.
Kevin, he told himself. My name is Kevin Stewart. I am human, not a beast.
But the beast disagreed, and it snarled at the intruder again, preparing to leap and gut the threat.

Confidence, not cockiness. Cockiness is knowing who you are and pushing it down everyone's throat. Giovanna knew she needed to leave, and sooner rather than later. She knew clearly he was threatened by her presence, and was willing to defend his kill. She had really lost her touch; normally she would not have thought twice and had been gone in a heartbeat, but for some reason she was still sticking around. The shifter’s tail flicked back and forth on occasion, her ears were still pressed flat against her head, her entire body tense, she was uneasy, but her eyes remained locked on the panther above her. She knew that at any moment he could easily attack. She was in no mood to fight, there was no reason to on her part, but for him clearly she was a threat. Gia could not afford it, not now. Nor could she risk another bad scar, or worse. However, she knew this was not time to be reminiscent. The shifter knew the potential danger she was in and the precariousness of the situation. Even so, she could not help it; the researcher in her was coming out. She wished that she had a camera and something to jot down her notes and observations. There would never be an opportunity for her to see such a beautiful creature in the wild, not like this.
She wanted to leave; she had to leave if she wanted her night to end pleasantly. The shifted started to back away slowly, not taking her eyes off the panther. She could not risk turning around leaving herself vulnerable to an attack. Her muscles were tense; this was not the kind of night she had imagined. Her first shift in months turned into a peril situation. Why would she have thought to be concerned? As far as she knew, the only risk was her running into other cougars, which was a rare occurrence in her experience.
Just my luck. Gia continued to back away, her eye’s never leaving the intimidating beast. However, throughout all of the conflicting and terrifying thoughts bouncing around in her mind, there was one question that kept poking at her; what was that cat doing here?
